Working from home can be a pain in the neck, literally.    So how do we set up a comfortable workspace?

A good chair

I think we can all agree that a padded seat is essential, but your chair should also be height adjustable with adjustable back support.

Set your chair height so you can use the keyboard with your wrists and forearms straight and level with the floor.   Your elbows should be by the side of your body so your arm forms an L-shape.

Footrest

You don’t want to sit with your feet dangling or legs crunched up.  Your feet should be flat on the floor.   You can purchase a footrest so that your feet are at a comfortable level.  I always have to have my feet raised when working, despite my long legs!

A computer screen and possibly a monitor stand

Your screen should be directly in front of you with the monitor about an arm’s level away.   The top of the screen should be roughly at eye level.

If your screen is not in this position, you may need a monitor stand to put your screen at the right height to avoid strain on your neck.

Keyboard

If you are typing away all day, then your wrists need some support.

There should be a gap of about 10 to 15cm between the edge of the desk and your keyboard on which to rest your wrists.   You might want to use a wrist wrest to keep your wrists straight and level with the keys to avoid strain.

A mouse

Keep your mouse close.  For added support, use a mouse mat with a wrist pad to keep your wrist straight.

Breaktime

Not a piece of equipment but do take regular break times to rest your eyes and stretch!

What piece of equipment could you not do without?
